Noah - set - Oct 2012

Noah: The massive structure built for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah has filled in since we first saw it in July; a new photo (top) gives a greater sense of its size. Photographer Dan Wagner notes: “To see it in person, and know there’s no CGI involved, was incredible.” Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson and Logan Lerman star; the film is due out on March 28, 2014. Memphis: It’s relatively rare nowadays for original Broadway shows to become movies -- the most recent example is Rock of Ages, which seriously underperformed -- but Memphis wants to buck that trend. The musical by Joe DiPietro and Bon Jovi’s David Bryan opened on Broadway in the fall of 2009 and won the Tony Award for Best Musical; the Mark Gordon Company will shepherd it to the big screen. Set in the 1950s, the story follows a white hustler who schemes his way to the top as the number-one disc jockey in the city, all while romancing a black club singer. [Deadline]

Academy Awards: Famed filmmaker Michael Moore helped tweak the Academy Award rules for documentary consideration last year, making it possible for all 170 members of the documentary branch to watch all films that qualified, but recently complained there were too many last-minute entries to watch. His latest plan is to scrap the rules entirely; instead he wants documentaries to qualify for consideration by meeting the same criteria as all other films. [The Wrap]

Carrie: To complement Perri Nemiroff’s excellent New York Comic-Con coverage of the upcoming new version of Stephen King’s Carrie, we have a look at the bloody international poster, which has just been released and features Chloe Grace Moretz as the titular troubled character. Julianne Moore costars as her mother; the film is due in theaters on March 25, 2013. [Coming Soon]
