The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: How do you motion-capture a dragon? For Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Benedict Cumberbatch was hired for his versatile performance abilities: his voice, his face and his entire body are important for his role as the great dragon Smaug, as a couple of intriguing new photos illustrate. The movie sneaks into theaters on December 13. [Bleeding Cool]

The Monuments Men: The theatrical release date for George Clooney's The Monuments Men, the World War II movie in which he stars with Matt Damon, Bill Murray and John Goodman in a race against the clock to rescue art treasures stolen by the Nazis, has been delayed from December 18 to the first quarter of 2014. Clooney says that, due to an extremely tight schedule after filming wrapped, the visual effects work "wasn't going to be finished, and I wouldn't want to have my name on it." [Los Angeles Times]

Anchorman: The Legend Continues: Ron Burgundy (Will Farrell) and his team are working hard to make sure people know that Anchorman: The Legend Continues, the sequel to the 2004 comedy classic, is coming to theaters on December 20. Toward that end, a new flavor of Ben & Jerry's ice cream will be produced in limited quantities: Scotchy Scotch Scotch (butterscotch ice cream with butterscotch swirls). Other Burgundy recommendations for new flavors include "malt liquor marshmallow, well liquor bourbon peanut butter, and cheap white wine sherbet.” [The Wrap]

At Middleton: What are parental units to do when their high school children ditch them while they're touring a small college? If you're free-spirited Vera Farmiga and conservative Andy Garcia, you flirt a little and (maybe) fall in love, as evidenced by the trailer for At Middleton (formerly known as Admissions). The comedy is heading to theaters and VOD on January 31. [Yahoo!]
