Jersey Boys

Musicals Need Words, Too: Busy screenwriter John Logan (Rango, Hugo, Coriolanus, Skyfall) will next tackle Jersey Boys, the big-screen version of the Broadway musical. The story revolves around the rise and fall of 1960s pop group The Four Seasons. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Making a Thriller Funny: With only a few produced credits to his name (Stranger Than Fiction and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, which he also directed, among them), Zach Helm has nonetheless established himself as a unique talent. He’ll need it to convert Patricia Highsmith’s thriller Deep Water into the “dark, sexy comedy” that Fox 2000 wants; Highsmith is best known as the author of Strangers on a Train and a series of novels featuring Tom Ripley. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Superhero Needs a Rewrite: When a new director is announced for a project, it’s not unusual for a script rewrite to follow, and that’s what has happened with Thor 2. Don Payne penned a draft; director Patty Jenkins left the project; TV vet Alan Taylor came on board to direct; and now Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, Falling Skies) will try to save the script with a rewrite. (Deadline)

Acrobats in 3D: Switching gears, Cirque du Soleil World’s Away, written and directed by Andrew Adamson, has been acquired for worldwide distribution by Paramount. The film, shot in 3D, integrates acrobatic performances from the group’s best-known productions; James Cameron serves as executive producer. (Entertainment Weekly)

Actions Unknown: A new action movie from Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams’ production company, is now in active development, and former animator Brad Parker has been selected to direct. No details are available about the script, written by Michael Gillo, but that’s standard operating procedure for Abrams’ Bad Robot. (Variety)
