Who Will Be the New ‘Star Trek’ Villain? A candidate from the independent film world has emerged as a candidate to replace Benicio Del Toro in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2. Edgar Ramirez (pictured above), who made waves with his outstanding performance as a notorious terrorist in French mini-series Carlos, is described as “the front-runner” for the role, while Jordi Molla (Colombiana) is also under consideration. Edgar, and Johnny Depp’s riding partner in the upcoming The Lone Ranger; now Armie Hammer wants to be a badass. In By Virtue Fall, ex-ATF agent Hammer will seek revenge against former partner Eric Bana, the man who framed him; Hammer will reportedly shave his head and bulk up to play the role, described as “a badass.” (Deadline)

Sci-Fi Thriller Gets a Director: The terrific Norwegian crime thriller Headhunters made a splash at Fantastic Fest this year, and is set for a U.S. remake. Meanwhile, director Morten Tyldum will make his U.S. debut with What Happened to Monday?, a sci-fi thriller about “septuplets who are trying to stay hidden in a time when having multiple children is outlawed.” (Entertainment Weekly)

If He Narrates, They Will Buy: Phillip Montgomery’s documentary ReGeneration has been acquired by Red Flag Releasing; the company plans an April 2012 release. Ryan Gosling narrated and produced the film, which examines apathy among young people; director Montgomery hopes it will serve as “a call to action.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
