Romantic Survivor: In what sounds like a potent combination of actor, director, and story, Michael Fassbender is in “early talks” to star in Mountain Man, to be directed by Gerardo Naranjo. Fassbender, of course, is on fire with all of his recent roles, and Naranjo seemed to take another great leap forward in his career with Miss Bala, a unique, acclaimed thriller. Mountain Man details the romance of two strangers who are the only survivors of a plane crash in the woods, and their struggle to stay alive. [Showblitz]

Can’t Do That: After William Friedkin’s potentially controversial crime drama Killer Joe was slapped with an NC-17 rating, the producers appealed the decision. But now that original decision has been upheld, citing the “graphic aberrant content involving violence and sexuality, and a scene of brutality.” [Deadline]

If Not Jake, Then Who?: Recently we passed on a report that Jake Gyllenhaal would be playing the lead role of a parolee who seeks revenge on the people who framed him for a crime he didn’t commit in Albert Hughes’ Motor City. Gyllenhaal, however, quickly dropped out due to scheduling isues, and now Jeremy Renner may be in -- unless he secures a part in Ridley Scott’s The Counsellor, in which case he won't be available, either. Mark Your Calendars: The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has set the date for next year’s Oscar broadcast: February 24, 2013. Rumors had been flying that the Academy would move the show to an earlier date, and while that didn’t happen for 2013, the announcement of the award nominations has been moved up one week, to January 15.
