The Avengers

Billion-Dollar Club: Box office estimates now place The Avengers in the elite company of films that have earned more than $1 billion worldwide. As it stands, The Avengers is the 11th film to break the billion-dollar mark, and by next weekend it’s expected to move into fourth place overall, behind Avatar, Titanic, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. A Little Too Dark: Here in the U.S., The Avengers made an estimated $103.2 million in its second weekend, a total that easily eclipsed the previous record set by The Dark Knight ($75.6 million). It also dwarved the debuting Dark Shadows ($28.8 million). Dark Shadows wasn’t expect to seriously compete with The Avengers, but as the only new wide release -- with the usually reliable teaming of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton -- its total is certainly a disappointment. Two More: Confirming previous reports, Julianne Moore is now set to co-star in Kimberly Peirce’s remake of Carrie in the crucial role of Margaret White, the unhinged mother of the telepathic teen, to be played by Chloe Moretz. Also joining the cast is British actress Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) as sympathetic schoolmate Sue Snell, originally played by Amy Irving; she's the one who convinces her boyfriend (John Travolta) to take Carrie to the prom. Meet the Lizard: The viral marketing campagin for The Amazing Spider-Man has been spreading, and in the clip below we can see the calm authority of Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) before he becomes The Lizard. Ifans and director Marc Webb also explain their approach to the character; hint: he's not a villain to them! [First Showing]
