Movie News in 60 Seconds: ‘Red’ Sequel Coming From ‘Galaxy Quest’ Director; Berlin Fest Winners; ‘Safe House’ Wins Weekend

Feb 20, 2012

Director Sees Red: The unexpected worldwide success of 2010’s action-comedy Red almost guaranteed a sequel would be produced, despite the fact that the original three-issue comic-book series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner consisted of only 66 pages of material. (Hamner did a sequel, by the way, and four prequel issues were also produced.) Erick and Jon Hoeber, who wrote the first adaptation, have penned the sequel, and Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is now set to direct, replacing Robert Schwentke. Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Morgan Freeman are expected to return, though, having seen the original, we’re not quite sure how all four can come back. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Berlin Film Festival Award Winners: An international jury headed by director Mike Leigh (and included actor Jake Gyllenhaal) presented the Golden Bear to Caesar Must Die at the just-concluded Berlinale 2012 in Germany. The film, directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (The Night of the Shooting Stars), documents a stage production of a Shakespeare play, mounted by inmates at a maximum-security prison in Italy. Christian Petzold took him a prize as Best Director for his drama Barbara. [The Daily Mubi]

Flaming Skull Finishes Third: Based on preliminary forecasts, Safe House ($24 million) and The Vow ($23.6 million), both in their second week of release, topped the debut of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ($22 million). That’s still better than This Means War ($17.5 million). The Secret World of Arrietty only made $6.4 million, but that still represents the best U.S. opening yet for a Studio Ghibli production; the film has already made $126 million worldwide.
