The Little Guy Triumphs: The mega-expensive John Carter proved to be a mega-disappointment on its opening weekend, earning a relatively paltry $30.6 million (though it made over $100 million worldwide), good enough only for second place at the box office, behind The Lorax, which held on to the top spot with estimated earnings of $39.6 million. The other two debuting films, Silent House ($7 million) and A Thousand Words ($6.35 million), also failed to make much of an impression on potential moviegoers. [Box Office Mojo]

Cruising and Singing: Could Tom Cruise team with Beyonce in a new remake of A Star is Born, to be directed by Clint Eastwood? The mind whirls. Cruise has completed his role as an “Axl Rose-like” musical icon in Rock of Ages, so the thinking goes that maybe he could handle the part of an aging musician played by Kris Kristofferson, opposite Barbra Streisand, in the 1973 version, which appears to be the template for the latest attempt to reinvent the wheel, er, old story. The Great Architect and the Young Boy: A new documentary explores a little-known story about the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright: he once designed a doghouse at the request of a 12-year-old boy. What’s more, he did it for free. Michael Miner’s Romanza features a rebuilt doghouse -- the original ended up in a dumpster -- built to Wright’s exacting specifications. The doc debuts at the Illinois State Museum on March 25. [Associated Press]
