The Hunger Games

Overseas Hunger: While The Hunger Games broke box office records in the U.S. over the weekend, moviegoers overseas were enthusiastic, but not quite so crazy, about the film. Opening in 67 markets, the film grossed $59.1 million, which was good enough for the #2 opening of the year, but still nearly $10 million less than -- surprise! -- John Carter, which is headed for a huge loss overall due to its tepid domestic reception. John Carter has earned $172.1 million overseas, far more than its $62.3 million take in the U.S. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Real-Life Record Dive: Breaking box office records is fine, but breaking the record for the deepest solo submarive dive is cool! Filmmaker James Cameron set the record by descending 6.8 miles to the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean, becoming the first human to reach the valley solo. He spent hours collecting samples and video (in 3-D) before safely returning to the surface. Cameron’s next undersea mission will have to wait until he jets to London for the premiere of Titantic 3-D on Wednesday. [National Geographic]

Check Your Attic: A collection of 33 rare movie posters sold at auction for a total of $503,000 on Friday. Half a million dollars! They were found in an attic in Pennsylvania, stuck together with wallpaper glue, and purchased at auction last fall for $30,000. A little steaming action revealed the rarities, topped by a 1931 Dracula poster that sold for $143,000 and one for Cimarron, the 1931 Western that won the Academy Award for Best Picture, which sold for $101,575.
