Uptown Saturday Night

Uptown Men: In 1974, Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier starred in Uptown Saturday Night (above), a comedy about best friends who are forced to dip into the criminal world; Poitier directed the crossover hit. Will Smith has been developing a remake for years, with an eye toward teaming up with Denzel Washington. And now Anchorman director Adam McKay is in negotiations to helm the project, which could fall into place after he does Anchorman 2. [Deadline]

Something’s Gotta Give, Part 1: Two romantic comedies with similar titles added cast members yesterday. Admission stars Tina Fey as a college admissions counselor and Paul Rudd as her potential paramour; Michael Sheen has joined up to play Fey’s current, uptight boyfriend. Production is tentatively scheduled to begin next month; Focus Features will release. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Something’s Gotta Give, Part 2: The other rom-com, Admissions, has just landed Vera Farmiga and Andy Garcia to star. They’ll be portraying parents who meet when accompanying their children on a tour of a small college. Farmiga's comic instincts have been woefully under-used, so this could open her up to a new world of possibilities if her performance and the film deliver. Of the two films, this is the one that's more likely to change titles as it seeks a distributor. [The Hollywood Reporter]

“We Should Do a Vampire Movie Together”: If the first trailer for Dark Shadows raised concerns for hardcore fans by emphasizing the comedy in Tim Burton’s upcoming film, a new promotional short may alleviate them. Burton and Johnny Depp talk seriously about the history of vampires in films and pay tribute to Christopher Lee and the late Jonathan Frid. [First Showing]
