Contraband

U.S. Box Office: Led by Mark Wahlberg, the thriller Contraband topped the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $24.1 million, followed by Disney’s re-release of Beauty and the Beast in 3D ($18.5 million) and gospel musical-comedy Joyful Noise ($11.3 million). Meanwhile, widely-derided horror flick The Devil Inside suffered a decline in attendance of 76.6%, a victim of bad word-of-mouth. (Box Office Mojo)

Good Genes: Adventure drama The Rut added star power with the casting of Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen) as the father of teen Chloe Moretz (Hugo), who seeks to impress him by embarking on a solo wilderness journey. Morgan and Moretz previously appeared together in indie drama Texas Killing Fields; Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body) is set to direct. (Variety)

Tragic Cruise Ship’s Cameo: The cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground in Italy on Friday night, tragically killing at least 5 people and injuring many more. As it happens, the ship was the setting for a portion of 2010’s Film Socialisme, directed by legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. (The Daily Mubi)
