Act of Valor

Live Fire at the Box Office: Active-duty Navy SEALs using live-fire ammunition proved to be the biggest draw at the box office over the week, as Act of Valor topped the chart with $24.7 million. Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds ($11.2 million) failed to draw as well as nearly all of the filmmaker’s previous outings, while the pairing of Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston resulted in a lackluster performance for their comedy Wanderlust ($6.6 million). Gone, the Amanda Seyfried thriller, could only manage $5 million in its wide release. [Box Office Mojo]

Indie Awards Stir Discontent: Film Independent’s Spirit Awards ceremony was held on Saturday afternoon, and, in advance of its Oscar wins, The Artist swept the top awards: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Male Lead, and Best Cinematography. Double victors included Margin Call (Best First Feature, Robert Altman Award) and The Descendants (Best Supporting Female, Best Screenplay). But the award winners prompted grumbling; one critic declared that “a wake up call” is needed, and another critic questioned whether the awards “still suck.” [Indiewire]

Record-Setting Razzies: He was featured prominently in pre-recorded gushing about movies that played during the Academy Awards telecast, but we can't imagine Adam Sandler is gushing about becoming the biggest Razzie nominee of all time. He received 11 Razzie nominations for three films released in 2011: Jack and Jill, Just Go With It, and Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star. The awards, voted on by 600 people and intended to single out the worst films of the year, will announce “winners” on April 1. [The Associated Press via The Washington Post]
