Making ‘Mary Poppins’: Did you know it took 14 years for Walt Disney to convince author P.L. Travers to sell him the movie rights to Mary Poppins? The long saga -- the author was reluctant to give up the rights to her very personal stories -- has been dramatized by Kelly Marcel in an acclaimed script titled Saving Mr. Banks, and now Disney (the company) is in talks to acquire the script and set John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) to direct. Rebooting National Lampoon: Writing partners John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are in negotiations to direct a reboot of National Lampoon’s Vacation. The duo are riding a surge of success that started with Horrible Bosses last summer, though their involvement on the Vacation project dates back to 2009. They’ve written the script, which is said to play “like both a sequel and a reboot” and revolves around a grown-up Rusty Griswold, played by Anthony Michael Hall in the 1983 original. Romantic Director Turns Musical: A fictional story set to the music of The Beach Boys may have found a director. Michael Sucsy, whose romantic drama The Vow has enjoyed unexpected box office success (more than $100 million so far), is in negotiations to direct the untitled project, written by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich). John Stamos, who has toured and recorded with The Beach Boys, will serve as one of the producers. [Showblitz]

Accused Murderer, Accused Journalist: In True Story, Jonah Hill will play a journalist accused of falsifying a story and James Franco will co-star as an accused murderer. The actors are now attached to the project, which will be directed by Rupert Goold and produced by Brad Pitt’s company, Plan B; first, though, they need to nail down financing. [Deadline]
