Movie News in 60 Seconds: 'The Vow' Tops Lucrative Weekend, BAFTA Winners, Angelina Jolie's Next, Whitney Houston's Final Movie

Feb 13, 2012

Moviegoers Take a Vow: For only the second time in history, four movies opened this weekend with over $20 million, with The Vow leading the charge in the top spot with $41.7 million, proving folks are definitely in the mood for love as we approach Valentine's Day tomorrow. Safe House ($39.3 million), Journey 2: The Mysterious Island ($27.6 million), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace ($23 million) and Chronicle ($12.3 million) rounded out the top five.

The Artist Leads BAFTA Winners: The Artist practically swept the British Academy Awards last night taking honors for Best Film, Best Actor (Kean Dujardin), Best Director and Original Screenplay for Michel Hazanavicius. Other winners: Meryl Streep (for Best Actress), Octavia Spencer (for Best Supporting Actress), Christopher Plummer (for Best Supporting Actor), and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy (for Outstanding British Film). Check out all the winners in the list posted at the bottom of the page.

Angelina Jolie to Play Maleficent: The project has been lingering for awhile now with Angelina Jolie kinda-sorta attached, but now it's become official: The actress' next project will be Disney's Maleficent, which is a take on the Sleeping Beauty tale as told from the point of view of the evil sorceress. Robert Stromberg (production designer on Avatar, Alice in Wonderland) will direct. [THR]

Whitney Houston's Final Film to Hit Theaters This Summer: Despite the tragic news that iconic pop star Whitney Houston has passed away at the age of 48, the film which was supposed to contain her comeback role will still arrive in theaters as scheduled this August. A remake to the 1976 hit Sparkle, Houston stars opposite American Idol winner Jordan Sparks (pictured above). "This would have been a big, big comeback, she is so brilliant in it," said executive producer Howard Rosenman.

Check out Jennifer Hudson's tribute to Houston at last night's emotional Grammy Awards below.
