The Avengers

Overseas Assembly: Moviegoers in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, and France are turning out in droves to see The Avengers, which opened in those countries yesterday ahead of its May 4 bow in the U.S. It scored the highest ever opening-day record in New Zealand, and the second-highest in Australia, All told, the movie will open in about 25 overseas territories this weekend, with expectations that it will sweep the globe and convert everyone into superhero fanatics by Sunday night. Guess Who Loves 3D?: Having completed Hugo, his first movie in 3D, Martin Scorsese now says he will only make movies in 3D. Also, in his inimitable style of sincere, enthusiastic hyberbole, he says he wishes that his classics Raging Bull and Taxi Driver had been in 3D. (?!) Also, he says “it immerses you in the story more. … I saw audiences care about the people more." Scorsese thinks the changeover will be similar to the way that color pictures supplanted those in black and white. [The Associated Press]

Love for Mandela: An upcoming romantic drama about Winnie and Nelson Mandela has picked up some impressive backing. Two companies run by the influential Bishop T.D. Jakes have come on board to produce and support Winnie, which stars Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard as the famed couple. The companies, which built credibility by helping Woman Thou Art Loosed to robust (and unexpected) success, “will help to develop domestic marketing and distribution plans.” Winnie is currently in post-production. Making an Exception: We have to wait until June 8 to see Prometheus, so we don't really want to burn you out on it yet, but the footage in this promotional feature looks so, so good that it's impossible to resist sharing it, though the uniform declarations of love and respect for director Ridley Scott from the film's adoring cast is, we admit, a bit much.
