The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

The Lion Takes a Loss: David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo did not perform fully up to expectations, according to MGM, who shared the cost of financing the film with Sony. As a result, MGM told investors, it has “booked a modest loss." The film, by the way, has grossed an estimated $231 million worldwide. Now MGM will only exercise its option to co-finance the other two films in the trilogy with Sony if it can work out “better economics." [Deadline]

Not So 'Lawless' Anymore: Director Terrence Malick is currently working on a trio of films, including one starring Christian Bale that was titled Lawless until very recently. Malick voluntarily gave up the title because “he’s a fan” of director John Hillcoat, allowing the title to be used instead for Hillcoat’s film, formerly known as The Wettest County, a prohibition-era bootleggers flick due out in August. Malick's movie, reportedly a thriller, is now in search of a new title. [Entertainment Weekly]

Overseas Growth: Though the general trend for ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada has been downward -- exceptions like The Hunger Games notwithstanding -- international movie ticket sales have soared 35% in the past five years, according to a new report from the MPAA. Ticket sales in China jumped 35% in 2011 alone. Also of note: In the U.S., “frequent moviegoers represent only 10% of the population but purchased half of all tickets sold in 2011.” [Los Angeles Times]
