Top Gun

Top Gun 2: Prospects for a sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, which confirmed Tom Cruise as a major star and made more than $350 million worldwide, now appear dim. Reportedly, the project has “fallen apart” in the wake of director Tony Scott’s death in August, and Paramount has turned its full attention to distribution of a 3D version of Top Gun, which was completed earlier this year and was intended to whet appetites for the sequel. The studio is eyeing February 2013 as a possible release date. [New York Times]

Machete Kills: Alexa Vega is now 24 years of age, and in a new photo from the upcoming Machete Kills, she is definitely shedding her image as a teenage star established in the family-friendly Spy Kids franchise. Vega plays a character named Killjoy in the movie, which stars Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Marko Zaor, Jessica Alba, Lady Gaga, and Charlie Sheen as the president of the United States. All will be revealed when the film hits theaters next year. [Rolling Stone via Coming Soon]

Man of Steel: Another blockbuster has fallen prey to the financial temptations of post-conversion 3D. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Man of Steel will be released in 3D as well as 2D when it opens wide on June 14, 2013. Director Zack Snyder previously made a 3D animated film (Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole), though producer Christopher Nolan is not a fan of the format, which typically incurs a surcharge (the so-called '3D bump') when exhibited in theaters. The Last Stand Trailer: What should we expect from Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s return to the big screen in a starring role? The new trailer for The Last Stand, directed by Korea’s Kim Jee-won, quickly and stylishly sets up the action-filled scenario, in which a dangerous criminal breaks out of prison and heads straight for the sleepy border town where Sheriff Schwarzenegger awaits.
