Movie News: 'Highlander' Reboot Moves Forward; Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong'o to Star in 'The Woman King'

Highlander

Highlander: A reboot of Highlander (above) has been in development for years. The project got a kickstart in November 2016 when Chad Stahelski (John Wick) signed on to direct; since then, writer Ryan Condal (Dwayne Johnson's Rampage) joined the project. Now comes word that Condal has submitted a favorable script to Lionsgate and pre-production is scheduled for October, with a 2019 release date in mind. [Deadline]

 

Suicide Squad

The Woman King: Viola Davis (Suicide Squad, above) and Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther) will star as a mother and daughter, respectively, in The Woman King. It's based on an original idea by actress and producer Maria Bello, inspired by the true story of a mother who served as general of an all-female military unit in Africa. The general and her daughter fought against threatening neighboring tribes and French colonialists. [THR]

 

Slumdog Millionaire

Music-Themed Comedy: Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, above) and Richard Curtis (Love Actually) are teaming to make a music-themed comedy. Curtis is writing the script and Boyle will direct. No story details have been revealed yet; the not yet titled project is still in the development process at Universal Pictures. [Deadline]

 

Chappaquiddick

Chappaquiddick Trailer: Jason Clarke stars in the real-life drama Chappaquiddick as Senator Ted Kennedy, who in 1969 was involved in a fatal automobile accident that took the life of a young campaign strategist (Kate Mara). In the film's final trailer, we get a broader view of the tragedy. Ed Helms, Jim Gaffigan and Bruce Dern also star; look for it in theaters on April 6. [Movieclips]
