Movie News: 'Aquaman' Gets a Strategic Delay; Superman Joins the Next 'Mission: Impossible'

Aquaman: Warner Bros. pushed the DC superhero movie Aquaman back a couple months from October 5, 2018, to December 21, 2018. While it could seem a negative decision, the release date change is favorable for the holiday crowds and was clearly made in the wake of the truly delayed Avatar 2 being taken off that weekend. Aquaman does have other competition, however, as it now goes up against Sony's animated Spider-Man feature. Say, @henrycavill. Had a thought. Curious if you're interested in a role in the 6th installment of Mission: Impossible. No pressure.

A post shared by Christopher McQuarrie (@christophermcquarrie) on

Mission: Impossible 6: Not letting his Superman gig keep him from other big franchises, Henry Cavill is joining the next Mission: Impossible sequel. His role is not known, but he has spy experience thanks to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Christopher McQuarrie, who revealed the casting on social media (see the comments above for his and Cavill's fun exchange), is back directing the sequel with Tom Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson also confirmed to return on screen. M:I 6 is due out July 27, 2018. [Instagram]

Freakshift: Cavill's U.N.C.L.E. co-star Alicia Vikander is in talks to lead the next movie from Ben Wheatley, whose latest, Free Fire, is one of the talks of SXSW this week. Freakshift is a gun-heavy action thriller about cops who fight underground monsters, and presumably Vikander would be the head of this special division of the police force. Rampage: Speaking of monster movies, the video game adaptation Rampage just cast its own awesome actress in a significant role. Watchmen's Malin Akerman has been tapped for the part of the main villain, a tech company boss responsible for giant creatures -- an ape, a lizard and a wolfman -- laying waste to a major metropolis. Dwayne Johnson will be her heroic foil. [THR

Early Man Teaser Trailer: Nick Park, creator of the beloved Wallace and Gromit films, is back with a new original feature about cavemen. Check out the first teaser trailer for the stop-motion animated movie, starring the voices of Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Redmayne and Maisie Williams below. Early Man has no U.S. release date but should open early next year.
