We love special effects around here, and today we've got two new video clips showing how some classic bits of movie magic were created that should please fans of both old-school practical visual effects and CGI alike.

First up, another awesome video from the Stan Winston School. Previously, we’ve seen loads of footage of Winston’s work on Terminator 2, but today’s clip shifts gears and takes us behind the scenes of another classic James Cameron flick, Aliens.

Scream 2 taught us that sequels have to be bigger and gorier than their inspirations, so when it came time to update the infamous xenomorph chestburster sequence, Winston and company had their work cut out for them. The scene in the original Alien is iconic – both horrifying and disgusting at the same time. For Aliens, the crew would have to re-create that, yet improve upon it at the same time. No small feat…

The video below shows us how Winston’s team approached the challenge – by updating the chestburster design. The newer animatronic is a pretty significant improvement over the original Giger design – but as the video explains, what really makes it work are the tiny mobile arms. Who’d have guessed?

One of the biggest special effects films of the summer was Guillermo del Toro’s monsters-vs.-mechs film  Pacific Rim. Since the title’s release in July, we’ve seen a lot of clips showcasing how the film’s lavish monsters and Jaegers were created. Today is no exception.

The video below highlights how the amazing prologue was created. There’s no narration with the clip, but sometimes images speak way louder than words ever could. It’s fascinating to see how much of the stuff in these shots was created with computers – CGI is really reaching some astounding levels of sophistication these days.
