Are These Really the Most Hated Films of All Time?

Mar 05, 2012

"Hate" is such a strong word, and I never like to use it when referencing movies. You hate people who commit inexcusable crimes against humanity, or giant storms that wipe out entire towns. You don't hate Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. You might not like it much, but surely you don't hate it ... right? One look at this new list of the 50 most hated films of all time over at Total Film, and we think the folks who put it together need to watch more films, preferably ones that came out before the year 2000. Off the top of our heads, you have films like Cannibal Holocaust or The Birth of a Nation, the latter of which caused riots in cities across America. We don't remember people taking to the streets in protest over Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, but feel free to refresh our memory.

Nevertheless, Total Film has put out their list -- with the aforementioned Crystal Skull leading the way as the number one most hated film of all time, followed by Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. From there the list looks more like a Top 50 Most Hated Films According to a Group of Teenage Fanboys in a Chat Room, with nerdy titles like Batman and Robin (6), Avatar (14), Daredevil (50), Terminator: Salvation (47), Superman Returns (49), Fantastic Four (44), Resident Evil (43), The Matrix Reloaded/The Matrix Revolutions (36), Catwoman (15), and Hulk (16) filling up a bulk of it. Sure, these films may not be loved by all, but it's hard for us to understand placing a film like Avatar at number 14 when it's the highest grossing film of all time. That doesn't make it hated. It just makes it worn out.

So are these really the 50 most hated films of all time? No. Mainly because it's impossible to create a list like this since all movies are open to all kinds of interpretation. And just because a group of people don't like Forrest Gump, that doesn't mean everyone hates it because I actually kinda like it. Feel free to check out their list and let us know what you think.

For starters, here are their top ten most hated films ever made ...

1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

2. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

3. Forrest Gump

4. Twilight

5. Psycho

6. Batman and Robin

7. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

8. Titanic

9. House of the Dead

10. Die Another Day
