In David Koepp’s spy comedy Mortdecai, Johnny Depp plays a dapper James Bond type (an art dealer by trade) whose good looks and roguish charm are his only weapons during the hunt to recover a stolen painting. He also has a “man servant” named Jock Strapp (Paul Bettany). Fine, Depp. You win this round. How can we refuse?
The film is adapted from the Mortdecai Trilogy written by Kyril Bonfiglioli — who was actually an art dealer in a former life. The books have been compared to the works of P. G. Wodehouse, particularly the Jeeves-Wooster novels. The gimmick seems to fall somewhere above the outright ridiculousness of the Austin Powers series. Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Olivia Munn and Aubrey Plaza also star. Mortdecai hits theaters February 6, 2015 going up against the Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending.
Do you have room in your life for another mustache-twirling performance from Depp?
