Remember that unsanctioned short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth that swept the Internet with its promise of a newer, grittier world for Sonya Blade (Jeri Ryan), Jax (Michael Jai White) and a few of the other names from the classic fighting game franchise? Well it already had sort of a happy ending in the form of an official web series from Warner Premiere (WB's digital content division) called Mortal Kombat: Legacy, but now The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline are both confirming a commitment to more than just a ten episode web series.
New Line has given the green light to a new feature film from the Rebirth/Legacy writing-directing team of Oren Uziel and Kevin Tancharoen. But that's about it, for now. We know that the film will somehow extend the story of the Legacy series, which focused on Sonya Blade and Jax, but we do not know if Jeri Ryan or Michal Jai White will be returning to play their roles of special agents trying to take down the likes of Kano and several other seedy characters of the criminal underworld.
In case you missed Legacy when it first hit the web, we've embedded the pilot episode below. The slick look of is a far cry from the guilty pleasure world of Paul W. S. Anderson's film, but at over 14 million views on YouTube, it's not hard to see why New Line is happy to get back into the feature film MK game.
