Legendary Actor Mickey Rooney Dies at 93

Apr 07, 2014

You could say it all about Mickey Rooney. The legendary actor who's been entertaining audiences since the 1920s passed away of natural causes over the weekend. He was 93. Known for his bubbly, eccentric personality, Rooney was a guy who left it all out there, working tirelessly over the course of several decades. He's a guy who had eight wives, multiple vices and always said exactly what was on his mind.

Throughout the course of his career, Rooney was nominated for four Oscars (The Black Stallion, The Bold and the Brave, The Human Comedy, Babes in Arms), with his first nod coming in 1940 and his last in 1980. In 1983 Rooney was awarded an honorary Oscar for his 50 years of memorable film performances. That was 1983, 31 years ago, and Rooney didn't stop there, either.

More recently, he stole every scene in Night at the Museum, had a small, memorable part in The Muppets and was filming a role in the upcoming Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This was a guy who never stopped entertaining; never stopped performing for over 80 years. That's just incredible.

Some of our favorite Mickey Rooney quotes:

"You've got to recognize, there will never be another you. It has nothing to do with ego; it happens to be the truth. There will never be another person the same. There'll never be another you. There'll never be another me... and there'll never be another show like this!"

"Had I been brighter, the ladies been gentler, the Scotch weaker, the gods kinder, the dice hotter - it might have all ended up in a one-sentence story."

"I didn't ask to be short. I didn't want to be short. I've tried to pretend that being a short guy didn't matter."

"Always get married in the morning. That way if it doesn't work out, you haven't wasted the whole day."

"I was a 13-year-old boy for 30 years."

"The audience and I are friends. They allowed me to grow up with them. I've let them down several times. They've let me down several times. But we're all family."
