Michael Rooker and James Gunn worked together on Slither way back in 2006 and apparently they really enjoyed the collaborative experience, because now we’ve learned that Rooker will be joining Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.
That’s right, The Walking Dead’s Merle Dixon will be ditching his knife hand for a bow and arrow in the upcoming film (which kinda makes him seem more like his crossbow-toting brother Daryl on AMC’s popular series). Rooker will play Yondu, a member of the Zatoan tribe on Centauri IV according to Wikipedia. The character doesn’t possess any crazy superpowers, but he’s an empath who can connect with other lifeforms when he’s not firing off arrows.
Oh, and did we mention that he can make those arrows change their direction and trajectory using a high octave whistle sound made using his voice? Did we neglect to point out that he, like Merle Dixon, had a missing right hand that was replaced by a bionic weapons-containment unit and that he later had the Guardians use their technology to clone his missing hand? Seriously, this Guardians movie sounds insane…
Rooker joins Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and pro wrestler Dave Bautista in the film, which is due in theaters on August 1, 2014.
