First Look: Check Out Michael Douglas as Legendary Pianist Liberace

Jul 31, 2012

Michael Douglas as LiberaceBehind the Candelabra takes its name from the 1988 tell-all from Liberace's former lover Scott Thorson. The 18-year-old confidant to the famed pianist started a relationship with Liberace in 1977, which lasted until 1982. After he was let go from his job as chauffeur, he sued the musician for $113 million in palimony causing a public scandal for Liberace who repeatedly denied he was homosexual. They later settled out of court with Thorson receiving $95,000.

Michael Douglas plays the flamboyant figure in the upcoming HBO film directed by Steven Soderbergh, with Matt Damon as the much younger Thorson. The hair on these two is fierce — at least according to a photo snapped on set that Huff Post shared earlier today. The story focuses on the duo's relationship and its aftermath, and filming has been taking place in some of the gaudiest cities the U.S. has to offer: Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Palm Springs. We can't wait to see Douglas — best known for his conspiracy thriller roles as a manly man of action (in the bedroom and the office, and the courtroom… ) — glitz it up in exotic costumes as a "one-man Disneyland."
