Update 8/6/13: Sly Stallone has returned to Twitter to confirm a huge casting for his upcoming Expendables sequel: Harrison Ford. According to the below tweet, Ford will replace Bruce Willis in an undetermined role in The Expendables 3, due out August 15, 2014. He'll join a pretty crazy '80s-centric ensemble cast including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sly Stallone, Mel Gibson, Mickey Rourke, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jason Statham and more. Get ready folks cause this one should be a doozy.
Update 7/17/13: Sylvester Stallone has confirmed in no subtle terms on Twitter that the rumors were true and Mel Gibson will indeed be the bad guy in The Expendables 3.
Just when you thought The Expendables 3 casting news couldn’t get any crazier (Nicolas Cage?), it somehow does. A new Showbiz 411 report has another new name that’s apparently about to be added to the project, and it will surprise you: Mel Gibson.
That’s right, the troubled star who watched his career disintegrate after an anti-Semitic rant directed at police officers and accusations of violence against his baby’s mama, may appear in the third installment of Sylvester Stallone’s popular action franchise.
A source tells Showbiz 411 that Gibson will join the production as “the villain” of the piece, meaning he gets to square off against Stallone’s band of action-film heroes. Ten years ago, the idea of William Wallace taking on Rambo would have been the greatest thing ever. Kinda sad how time ruins everything.
There’s no official confirmation on this story yet, so it’s still a rumor, but with shooting on The Expendables 3 slated to get underway this summer, we’ll probably know more in the near future. Gibson has been linked to the project before – Stallone mentioned him as his choice to direct the third installment in the series, but it appears as though the actor passed on that opportunity in favor of maybe doing some work in front of the camera.
Gibson’s made several attempts at relaunching his career. There was a disastrous turn in Jodie Foster’s bizarre The Beaver and then the direct-to-DVD action flick Get the Gringo. Neither found a lot of traction with audiences. Maybe that changes with an appearance in a high-profile summer flick like The Expendables 3.
This news caps off a week of casting updates for the project. Earlier reports indicate that Wesley Snipes, Nic Cage, Milla Jovovich and Jackie Chan are also in “advanced negotiations” to join the squad.
The Expendables 3 is due for another tour of duty in August 2014.
