Off Screen follows up on big screen characters in other media, be they comics, books, TV shows or video games.

Max Payne 3It's no ancient mystery that video game movies tend to stink.  If we're lucky, they're just a poor impression of what made the game so popular in the first place, but more often than not they're just plain bad movies.  The 2008 John Moore-directed Max Payne falls closer to the first category.  It's miscast (Mark Wahlberg is a poor man's Max Payne and Mila Kunis, bless her, just can't pull off the badass Mona Sax) and fails to accurately capture the spirit of the game about a good cop living in a dirty, drug-addled world.

Don't let Moore's totally blah film sour you on the franchise, though.  Just pretend it doesn't exist.  That's exactly what Rockstar Games are doing with Max Payne 3, which now has its first trailer.  And if you're wondering what 'ole gruff voice has been up to since 2003's the Fall of Max Payne, here's the official synopsis:

"Still haunted by the memories of his traumatic past, Max begins a new life working private security protecting a wealthy industrialist and his family in São Paulo, Brazil. When gangs target the family under his protection, Max is forced to fight to save his clients and clear his name, in a bid to, once and for all, rid himself of the demons that have tortured him for far too long."
