Matthew McConaughey Is Out of 'Magic Mike XXL,' but These Ladies Are In

Sep 19, 2014

The Matthew McConaughey train is leaving the station at a bazillion miles per hour. Directors and other creatives better jump on it quick if they want a chance to work with the True Detective actor. Magic Mike fans have been holding hope that there would be another McConaughey striptease in the film’s upcoming sequel, titled Magic Mike XXL (we’re just a little bit concerned about that part). But once again, it’s been confirmed, via Magic Mike XXL director Greg Jacobs (a regular Steven Soderbergh collaborator/producer, including the new Clive Owen-licious series The Knick), there will be no McConaughey in the drama about male dancers.

But we do know that MMXXL will be “very different” according to the filmmaker. “What am I allowed to say? It’s [a] road-trip movie and put it this way, it’s different enough that once you see it you’ll understand why we made a sequel. No one will be accusing us of making the same movie twice.” Magic Mike alum Soderbergh will be director of cinematography, camera operator and editor. Star Channing Tatum reprises his role as the eponymous hero in a thong—as do Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello. In addition to the boys, Andie MacDowell (Groundhog Day) has joined the cast, and Jada Pinkett Smith is said to be circling the role of a strip-club owner.

The rest is a mystery, but deals are currently being made amongst potential new cast members. Ready your penicillin, because the film bumps and grinds its way to theaters on July 1, 2015.
