Matt Damon made it clear that he was walking away from the Jason Bourne character he turned into a box office juggernaut when he passed the series reigns over to Jeremy Renner for the upcoming Bourne Legacy. However, if producer Frank Marshall gets his wish, Damon may be back to play the character at least one more time.
Marshall, director Tony Gilroy, and star Jeremy Renner sat down with Empire recently, and Marshall dropped this enticing bit of info about the potential next installment in the long-running series.
“You see there are several different [programs] in the movie with different skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up."
While this is still in the realm of “wishful thinking” on Marshall’s part, it would be pretty awesome if it came to pass. Renner already has some experience with being the “new guy” in an action franchise and sharing the spotlight with an established star (it’s a similar scenario to the one he found himself in during Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol), so it doesn’t seem likely that Renner would balk at teaming up with Damon. Instead, the real hurdle here would be Jason Bourne himself – getting Damon to come back will most likely require some cajoling and a great script.
We think it would be well worth the effort, though – seeing Renner’s new character and Bourne share the screen, with Damon officially “passing the torch” would be great. We’ll just have to wait and see if it actually happens.
Meanwhile, in the same interview, Renner shares that his new character is “coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this...He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the [program]. He's a person who wants to be part of something... to have a sense of purpose. But then it's taken away."
Creating a film with this new character and Bourne could lead to more box office success for a series that has morphed into one of the best action franchises of the past few years. What do you think? Do you want a Bourne film with Damon and Renner or are you ready to move forward without Jason Bourne?
