THR reports (via The Playlist) that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will be producing Race to the South Pole, starring Ben's little brother, Casey Affleck. The story centers on Royal Navy officer and explorer Robert Falcon Scott (Affleck) and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.
In 1912, Scott took his men on a long trek to the South Pole. The expedition took about three months, and many men turned back due to the treacherous conditions, but they finally made it to their destination. Unfortunately, they realized that Amundsen and his team had gotten there first — five weeks earlier. Scott was crushed and wrote in his diary, "The worst has happened;" "All the day dreams must go;" "Great God! This is an awful place." He never made it out of Antarctica with his four men, as they all died due to starvation, extreme weather conditions and exhaustion. The harrowing real-life tale definitely seems like great dramatic fodder for Affleck and Damons' project, which is being written by Peter Glanz (The Longest Week).
The Playlist also brings news that the bro-dude trio's Whitey Bulger biopic project is still on the table. Affleck would direct the picture, with Casey and Matt starring. Bulger was the head of a Boston crime family who was on the lam for many years, but was arrested in 2011 at the age of 81. Affleck spoke to The Examiner about the film — which he's considering starring in as FBI agent John Connolly, who took on Bulger as an informant:
"[Boardwalk Empire writer] Terence Winter [has] written a first draft. It’s a movie I really want to make. It’s a tough story because it’s a long story and I really want to do the whole span. I want to go from Alcatraz where they experimented on him with LSD all the way ending up in the farmers market in Santa Monica. I will direct it. Matt (Damon) will star in it. My brother (Casey Affleck) will play Billy. I’m really excited for it, my only concern, OK I have two things, I want to do it right, you can’t f--k up Whitey Bulger. But I know there’s other guys out there who want to make the movie so do you want to be second? You diminish the appetite."
Twilight star Peter Facinelli wants to produce a story about Bulger and already has a script in hand, but no talent has been attached to the feature at this time.
Both projects sound extremely ambitious, and it sounds like Affleck is giddy about bringing the Boston-based crime drama to film. He's even admitted "it’s where [his] heart is," so stay tuned for details as we get them.
