You’ve undoubtedly seen countless Internet videos reimagining classic movies as 8-bit video games, but YouTube user Phillip Raupach has flipped the script in this cool updating of The Matrix.
Rather than simply re-create the film with the 8-bit graphics of the Nintendo Entertainment System era, Raupach has instead kept the film’s visuals and replaced all the sound effects with ones pulled from classic games. The result is hilarious – and almost a homage to the classic chop-socky flicks that undoubtedly inspired the fight choreography of the Wachowskis' film.
Raupach reveals that this was a project he did for an audio production class. He challenges viewers to try and guess all the different games he grabbed sound effects from (while also pointing out that he included a few sounds he made himself – which was part of the assignment). It’s harder than it sounds – I know there’s some stuff from Contra and Super Mario Bros. in there, as well as some Street Fighter, but I’m sure there are more that I’m missing.
Check out the video below and see how many sound effects you can identify.
