Most of Alfred Hitchcock’s films age like fine wines and deserve expert handling by the studio that owns their rights. The espionage caper North by Northwest, starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, is a Hitchcock classic that is getting a 50th Anniversary Edition makeover on November 3 from Warner Bros. Although it will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray, North by Northwest will be the first movie by the Master of Suspense to be released in high-definition. The meticulous restoration used an 8K scanning process of the original VistaVision production elements that gives the movie a depth and clarity never seen before. Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain two comprehensive featurettes: “The Master’s Touch: Hitchcock’s Signature Style” contains interviews, clips and behind-the-scenes footage, and “North by Northwest: One for the Ages” features interviews with directors Guillermo del Toro, William Friedkin, Curtis Hanson and Francis Lawrence discussing the film’s importance and influence on their own work. The Blu-ray book also contains 44 pages of photos, film facts and “insider information.” Blu-ray Bob hopes that someday Psycho, Vertigo and Rear Window get the same love and attention.
