Marvel's Black Widow Is Closer to Getting Her Own Movie

Captain America: Civil War

Supply is finally coming to the demand for a Black Widow movie. Marvel fans have been hoping for Scarlett Johansson to get a solo effort for years, and soon they may get one. According to Variety, the studio is moving ahead with the project, hiring filmmaker Jac Schaeffer (TiMER) to write the screenplay. Schaeffer also co-wrote the recent Disney animated short Olaf's Frozen Adventure and is writing the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake Nasty Women

Marvel head Kevin Feige has been teasing a Black Widow standalone spin-off for a while, but he seems to want to only do it if it feels right and has a great script. Feige reportedly vetted "several candidates" before choosing Schaeffer. Johansson has also been involved with the creative planning for her character's solo outting. Rightly so, as this could be her Wonder Woman. Next step should be to find a woman filmmaker to direct the thing.

Johansson made her debut as Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, in 2010's Iron Man 2. Since then she's reprised the role in four movies, including The AvengersCaptain America: Winter SoldierAvengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. This summer, she'll return in Avengers: Infinity War and next summer is the untitled fourth Avengers movie. The character has been integral to the francise alongside male superheroes who continue to get their own movies.

Last year, Johansson was quoted as saying about the idea:

I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself. Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it.

As fans have waited for a Black Widow movie, they've seen the DC-based series release their very successful Wonder Woman and other studios put out their own relevant female-focused spy action movies, such as last year's Atomic Blonde. Many people have also been likening the upcoming action thriller Red Sparrow, which is based on the 2013 spy novel of the same name by Jason Matthews, to what a Black Widow movie would be.
