Marvel Studios Countdown: Who Is Sylvester Stallone Playing in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'?

Mar 21, 2017

We were all so busy getting excited over the addition of Kurt Russell to the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we forgot Sylvester Stallone had a role. It’s a Tango and Cash reunion! Well, that’s assuming the two actors even share the screen together. We know Russell is playing Peter Quill’s father in an inventive reworking of the Marvel Comics character Ego the Living Planet, but we still don’t know who Stallone is playing.

What we do know is that Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville’s Lex Luthor and a close friend of director James Gunn’s) plays a character that works “in tandem” with Stallone’s role. Gunn discussed their roles on Adam Corolla’s podcast, but never clarified who the actors were playing, only that they were “very important to the Marvel Universe.”

Of course this has lead to all manner of speculation, so we thought we’d break down those rumors, from what we perceive as the least likely to the likeliest.

They’re Playing Silver Surfer and Galactus

Both characters are controlled by Fox under the Fantastic Four license. Silver Surfer is the powerful herald of the world-devouring Galactus. Some believe there was a secret arrangement regarding control of these characters so that Fox could start putting the X-Men on TV (starting with FX’s Legion). This rumor, floated by Birth.Movies.Death, seems like a real long shot for a Guardians sequel.

They’re Playing High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock

High Evolutionary and Adam Warlock do work in tandem and we know “Her” (aka Ayesha), the female Adam Warlock counterpart, is a major character in GOTG Vol. 2. High Evolutionary is a villain with a god complex, who creates Adam Warlock to be a new messiah for the universe. There’s a kind of logic behind this one, but Adam Warlock feels like a big enough player in the Marvel U for that to go through a major casting process, not just handed to Gunn’s (admittedly talented) actor pal Rosenbaum.

They’re the Kree Supreme Intelligence and Mar-Vell

We like the thought of Stallone as the Kree Supreme Intelligence a lot. He’s a long-running Avengers villain and very important to the Marvel U and possibly the upcoming Captain Marvel film. Stallone would totally work. He’s a giant head floating in a two-story jar of space goop, steering the alien Kree to embrace their war-like nature. Birth.Movies.Death pegs Rosenbaum as an important Kree commander, like Mar-Vell, if this is the case. If this were true, it would likely mean both characters would appear in 2019’s Captain Marvel alongside Bree Larson.

They’re Nova Corps

This is a rather dull choice, but it also wouldn’t be the first time known actors have filled the roles of Nova Corps members. We’ve seen John C. Reilly and Glenn Close as these space cops already. This rumor seems to be extrapolated from reports that Stallone’s costume in the film looks like a Nova Corps costume.

They’re Playing Ravagers

It’s kind of boring to think they’re just playing Ravager’s, space pirates lead by Quill’s adoptive father Yondu (Michael Rooker). Heroic Hollywood broke this rumor, but it doesn’t align to Gunn’s comment about them being important to the Marvel U, unless…

They’re Playing “Original” Guardians of the Galaxy

Yondu was one of comics’ original cast of Guardians, so maybe Stallone and Rosenbaum are also picking up the mantles of Ravagers who also happen to be classic members of the original line-up, like Stallone as Charlie-27 and Rosenbaum as Starhawk? It doesn’t feel far-fetched.

They’re facets of the Living Tribunal

If we take Gunn’s “in tandem” statement literally, Stallone as the cosmic being The Living Tribunal might mean Rosenbaum is a different face on the Living Tribunal’s three-sided skull. The cosmic judge’s third face is covered by a cloth. This idea (sans Rosenbaum) was floated by What Culture a year ago and makes a lot of sense within a universe that includes cosmic mainstays from the comics like Celestials and The Collector.

Do any of these sound right to you or do you have your own fan theory? Who do you think Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rosenbaum are playing?

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’, a James Gunn film, stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. There are 45 days until release.
