The Mortal Kombat reboot is still working its way through the development cycle (slowly, it would appear, by the lack of any major updates) but that doesn’t mean you can’t get reacquainted with all your favorite kombatants in the meantime. To help you stay up to date on who’s who in the MK universe, YouTube user Super Oleg has crafted this silly series of videos where he takes on some of the baddest badasses in Mortal Kombat history.
What’s really great about these clips is the way they incorporate classic sprites from the game and put them in a real-world setting. It’s an effect vaguely reminiscent of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, but it’s still pretty amazing that technology has advanced to the point where YouTube users can do this stuff without the backing of an entire studio.
As for the real MK movie, the latest buzz (courtesy of Mortal Kombat Legacy producer Lance Sloane) indicates that the film has a script that everyone is happy with and they’re now in the process of figuring out a release window designed to tie in with the release of a new Mortal Kombat game (because you knew that was coming). Here’s what Sloane revealed at this past July’s San Diego Comic-Con:
“Well, we’ve been in green-light committee for a while at the studio and we’ve got a great script, and we’ve got a great director with Kevin Tancharoen who is on board. It’s just figuring out the business side of it, and when we would do it, and when we would launch it, and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they’re working on now. It’s not 100% yet, but we’re getting closer every day.”
That sounds vaguely reassuring – but if you’re yearning to rip someone’s spine out with your bare hands, maybe these Super Oleg vids will satiate your bloodlust. Although, really, you might want to see someone about that.
