Watch an Interview with Mark Hanna, Whom Matthew McConaughey Plays in 'The Wolf of Wall Street'

Dec 31, 2013

The other day we brought you videos and more information on the real-life people behind Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, but one person we left out was Mark Hanna, whom Matthew McConaughey brilliantly portrays in the film. McConaughey serves as Jordan Belfort's (Leonardo DiCaprio) mentor, so to speak, and it's through him that Belfort learns about the business. The scene where the two guys are out to lunch is one of the film's best. The way McConaughey's character seduces Belfort with his chest-thumping and carefree attitude, like a shark dressed in a tuxedo convincing you that he's on your side; he wants to devour everyone but you.

In real life, that guy was Mark Hanna. No, the chest-pounding did not come from him. In actuality, that is something McConaughey does to get himself ready to perform, and DiCaprio liked it so much he asked him to make it part of the scene. The rest of the character is pretty accurate, though, and you get a real sense of that in this recent interview with Hanna, conducted by radio host Isabelle Dungan.

In it, Hanna admits to mentoring Belfort and showing him the ropes. He talks about the parties, the strippers and the high-priced hookers. He also says that when Belfort left his company to start his own business on Long Island, Hanna actually bought 25% of it and worked with Belfort for another two years, which is something the movie leaves out. Another thing not mentioned in the movie is the fact that Hanna also went to prison for over four years.

There's a whole ton more revealed in this eight-part interview with Hanna. We embedded the first three parts below, and you can check out the rest right here.
