While every gamer I know is spending today getting ready for the midnight launch of Sony’s PlayStation 4, that doesn’t mean fans of Nintendo and its flagship character, Mario, don’t have something to look forward to this week.
Divergent writer Evan Daughtry has written and directed four new shorts focusing on the characters of Shigeru Miyamoto’s beloved Mario universe – but if you’re looking for cute and cartoony, you’re in for a bit of a shock.
Daughtry’s first two shorts – the Mario-based The Fixer and Luigi’s The Addict are now online. The gritty reimaginings of the iconic characters might at first seem like a bad idea (sort of like that whole Mario Bros. movie), but Daughtry makes it work by reinterpreting the characters for a modern world while retaining enough ties to the games to keep gamers happy.
The filmmaker explains his approach to the material:
“Making these short films gave me a chance to really ‘do my own thing,’ while having a little fun treating one of my favorite video game properties with a darker vibe. I had been kicking around the idea for years before I was even working in the industry, so to finally be able to share these films with fans on Polaris is a very exciting thing.”
Daughtry isn’t new to reenvisioning well-known stories – he also wrote Snow White and the Huntsman.
With the first two shorts are available online, fans will have to wait for the final two installments in the series to debut (centering on Princess Peach and Toad) later this week.
