(1) The Dark Knight Rises vs. (1) The Avengers
On the surface, they’re not that different – anticipated stories that tie together threads that were started in previous blockbusters. And both films are bursting at the seams with recognizable comic book characters played by award-worthy talents, directed by cult heroes who will make (or break) this summer season.
And yet, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers couldn’t be more different when it comes to style and tone, and that’s likely what will decide which movie emerges triumphant once the last vote is cast. Christopher Nolan aims for a dark and shadowy realism in his Batman movies, while Joss Whedon seems to be going for an exaggerated, animated carnival atmosphere as he assembles Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Does one film have an advantage? It’s possible The Avengers could benefit from the ongoing marketing onslaught that’s preceding the film’s May 4 release date. But if there’s any film that came into the contest as a clear-cut favorite to win the who shebang, it’s The Dark Knight Rises.
