After languishing in development hell for more than five years, David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars finally has two new clips to boast about — although one feels more like a rough sketch. Maps to the Stars is Cronenberg’s Hollywood opus à la David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (but perhaps heavier on the absurdist side), commenting on the industry’s relationship with Western culture, centered on a dysfunctional Tinseltown family.
The cast couldn’t be better: Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska (who is quickly becoming our go-to creepy girl, taking over for Christina Ricci), John Cusack, and Robert Pattinson (his second go-round with the director). "Maps to the Stars is very extreme. It's not obviously a very big commercial movie, and even as an independent film it's difficult,” the filmmaker told the Playlist in 2012. “Maps to the Stars is completely different [from Cosmopolis], but it's very acerbic and satirical; it's a hard sell."
These new trailers approach the tale from different perspectives, with the latter ramping up the unhinged sex and suggested violence — and what’s not to love about that? Tread carefully as the bottom clip is NSFW, but do tell us if you’ll be seeing this one in theaters once we’re gifted with an official release date.
