True Detective is over, and the rush of awards season for Dallas Buyers Club has passed, but the McConaissance is still going strong. There is potentially sad news, however, from camp Magic Mike XXL — the sequel to the 2012 Steven Soderbergh-directed stripper drama.
According to Gabriel Iglesias, who starred as DJ Tobias in the first film, Matthew McConaughey will not be making a return to the series as nightclub owner Dallas. During his appearance on Dish Nation, per Uproxx, Iglesias told viewers: “Word has it that Matt’s probably not gonna be involved, because he’s worth a lot of money now – that whole Oscar thing – so, but yeah, I’ve signed on for part two.”
We’ve heard from other sources that McConaughey has hung up his G-string for good, but star Channing Tatum has promised that the new film will feature “a s**t-ton of just ridiculous stuff.” We'll try to pick up the pieces of our lives, even though we'll miss the bare-chested cowboy. Besides, we’d rather see McConaughey change his mind about rejoining True Detective in some capacity.
Magic Mike XXL, directed by Greg Jacobs, will debut on July 3, 2015.
