Lucky 13: MGM Plans Star Gift Sets for the Holidays

Sep 09, 2009

‘Tis the season when studio marketing folks have visions of box sets dancing in their heads. These determined holiday planners are checking their home-video catalog list and checking it twice to find new ways to repackage and resell your favorite DVDs to you. MGM is celebrating 85 years of its stars with 13 all-new collections of what it calls its “most iconic and entertaining big-screen performers.” Each Star Collection set comes in a collectible slipcase and has four “timeless titles” starring the featured actor. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if the collections of Winona Ryder (Mermaids, Autumn in New York, Great Balls of Fire, 1969), Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde 1 and 2, Man in the Moon, SFW ) and Nicolas Cage (Valley Girl, Honeymoon in Vegas, Leaving Las Vegas, Moonstruck ) can compare to those of Clint Eastwood (A Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; Hang ‘em High), Gary Cooper (The Westerner, Man of the West, Along Came Jones, Pride of the Yankees) and Jodie Foster (Hotel New Hampshire, Silence of the Lambs, Foxes, Little Man Tate). Others are just head-scratching, but since the sets are limited to MGM movies only, that explains why some of the movies included seem like they were plucked from the shelf by Helen Keller. When you think of Robert Downey Jr., are Charlie Bartlett, Back to School, Home for the Holidays and Richard III the four films that come to mind first? How about Desperate Hours, Pope of Greenwich Village, Prayer for the Dying and Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man for Mickey Rourke? The remaining Star Collections include Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon, Frank Sinatra, Jack Lemmon and Sean Connery. Now, you might have to wait another 85 years for collections by venerable modern-day thesps like Megan Fox, Kristen Stewart, Ashton Kutcher and Channing Tatum, but that’s OK by us.
