Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Jurassic Rises: Can the writers of the surprisingly good Rise of the Planet of the Apes (above) resuscitate another dead franchise? Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have been hired to craft a script for Jurassic Park 4, which will attempt to kick-start the series. Multiple scripts have been written for the fourth installment over the past 10 years, but none have been to the satisfaction of Steven Spielberg, who will produce, but not direct, the next film. Leo’s Dad: If you’re of a certain age, then you first got to know Rob Reiner as an actor (as “Meathead” on the great TV show All in the Family) before he moved behind the camera and established himself as a film director. He’s been absent as a film actor since 2003, but he’s in talks to return in a plum role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street as the father of Leonardo DiCaprio’s rise-and-fall stockbroker. Auteur, Auteur: Film critic Andrew Sarris, who helped popularize the auteur theory in the U.S., has died. He served as film critic for The Village Voice for nearly 30 years and then moved to New York Observer. He wrote six books, including his most famous, The American Cinema: Directors and Direction 1929-1968. None other than Roger Ebert calls him “the most influential American film critic of his time.” [New York Times / Fandor]

Bizarre Love Triangle: A new version of Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy’s literary classic, is heading to the big screen, courtesy of director Joe Wright  (Atonement). Keira Knightley, Jude Law, and Aaron Johnson star; check out the first trailer below. [Empire Online]
