The Cannes Film Festival lineup looks incredible as always, and one star we’re used to seeing in front of the camera will be making his directorial debut at the French fest. We finally have an official synopsis for Ryan Gosling’s Lost River, which star Iain De Caestecker recently expanded upon during an interview. “All I can really say is that it centers around a family. There’s my character, Bones, his mother and his younger brother. There’s also a girl next door played by Saoirse Ronan, called Rat.”
Gosling has indicated that the movie bears the marks of David Lynch's oeuvre, which seems evident in the above film still just released. That’s Christina Hendricks and… something terrible is happening we can’t quite decipher. Color us curious and, sorry, excited. De Caestecker dropped other plot details, revealing:
"It’s about this family living in a town called Lost River, which is perhaps a place that was once full of family and happiness and love, and is now this town that’s slowly descending into a place without any hope. This family is holding onto the foundations of their house and everything they think they need to hold on to."
And if that weren’t enough, here’s the official plot that sounds deliciously nightmarish:
Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, BILLY, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while BONES, her eighteen-year-old son, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.
Stay tuned for more on Lost River — which also stars Ben Mendohlson, Matt Smith, Barbara Steele (wow!) and Eva Mendes — as we get closer to Cannes.
