Last month we gave you a peek at Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut — the fantasy noir Lost River, starring Christina Hendricks, Ben Mendelsohn, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan, Barbara Steele and Matt Smith. The "modern-day fairy tale" finds Hendricks as a single mother who becomes swept up in the dark underworld of a vanishing city. Her teenage son Bones discovers an underwater town that could be the key to their survival. The film premieres at Cannes this week, and we’re getting our first look at a clip from the surreal story.
If this preview is any indication, Lost River is visually striking. The scene is set against an apocalyptic landscape, opening with a shot framed by colorful graffiti. We’re dying to know more about the guy with the microphone who is raving about his muscles. And what’s in the bag? Could Gosling’s film usher in the new “What’s in the box?” These are important questions.
"I wanted to make this film because it's a movie that I would want to see,” he explained in a press release. “Like many children who grew up in the 1980s, I first approached the cinema through mainstream films. I was excited to shoot this kind of story, but with the language of filmmaker that I've acquired through the years.” Way to be vague, bro.
If abstract chaos, fire, DIY codpieces, and running from danger in a sheer panic appeals to you, check out the latest clip from Lost River. Stay tuned for more as we get it.
