If you haven’t had your fill of Rian Johnson’s super-cool sci-fi flick Looper yet (and we haven’t – we’re still talking about it on a daily basis), then you’ll certainly want to check out this new video for the film.
Billed as a “proof of concept” piece, Rian Johnson created this fake trailer with animation, clips from other films, and voice-over narration for Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character. The result is really quite impressive – if we had seen this before we knew what Looper was, we’d have geeked out bigtime.
The brief clip lays out the basic gist of the movie – in the future, criminal organizations kidnap those they want to eliminate and send them back in time where an assassin is waiting to kill them. Johnson uses clips from movies like Seven, Blade Runner and The Professional to showcase his vision – and it all cuts together really well. The editing job here is nicely done.
Johnson offered up an explanation for the clip, which gives you a little insight into its creation. Thank goodness for the Internet – where cool things like this not only live on, but find audiences who’d have never known they existed otherwise.
“This is a strange curiosity I thought might be interesting -- just after I finished the script for Looper but before we began preproduction I asked Joe to record some voice-over, and with help from my friend Ronen Verbit constructed this "fake trailer" using clips from other movies. This is a fairly common thing to do when you're trying to get a movie off the ground, but it was the first time I tried it. It was meant to show more some of the film's tone, and to show how the odd concept could be presented in a clear and compelling way in the marketing. Zach Johnson did the sketches. Note that we hadn't begun the casting process yet, and the clips were chosen just based on their visuals and not by who is in them. - R. Johnson”
