Look: Robert Pattinson Recreates 'Videodrome,' 'Dead Ringers' and 'Scanners' for Freaky Cronenberg-Esque Photo Shoot

May 10, 2012

We'll admit to having given Robert Pattinson a bit of a hard time as he's inched his way through the Twilight films, quickly transforming into the kind of teen heartthrob who's only ever mentioned in conjunction with something sparkly -- but with a huge Cannes Film Festival debut looming, we're getting a sense that right now is Pattinson's opening to transition to something with a bit more weight and respect behind it. He's starring in David Cronenberg's new film, Cosmopolis, and it looks like a complete departure from anything he's done before.

To drive that point home even further, it was Pattinson's idea to get as risky as possible with a photo shoot for Premiere France. He wanted to push buttons -- to change the way people perceive him -- and so he came up with a plan to pay homage to some of Cronenberg's earlier films, like Videodrome, Scanners and Dead Ringers. The 13-hour photo shoot, which took place in a hotel in downtown Los Angeles, produced these freaky images, which should hopefully bring a smile to the face of Cronenberg fans and may just help Pattinson begin climbing out from under Twilight's shadow.

Here's a snippet from the magazine (translation and images courtesy of Cosmopolisfilm.com) : "To say that he got involved in the making of the photoshoot is an euphemism. The first images of Scanners and Videodrome we prepared for him as an inspiration for the future snapshots came back to us with an unexpected commentary: Rob was sorry that they weren’t more daring, wanting to push all the limits with this shoot – the complete opposite of what someone in his position would have asked. Two days later, the photograph Eliot Lee Hazel and his crew – sort of strange for this kind of shoot (a special effect makeup artist, a pregnant lady …) – met in a gloomy hotel in downtown L.A. to give the go-ahead of this shoot that lasted for exactly 13 hours. After seeing the results of this shoot, we’re ready to bet that you won’t look at Robert Pattinson the same way again. That the last pretense who might still weigh on the actor will fly away as fast as they appeared."

Check out a selection of the images below, and see if you can pair the image with the Cronenberg film Pattinson is paying homage to.
