'The Lone Ranger' Trailer: The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Team Trades the High Seas for the Old West

Oct 03, 2012

Johnny Depp may have stuck with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise after director Gore Verbinski left it behind, but the two haven't stopped making movies together. Depp led the voice cast in Verbinski's inspired animated-feature debut, Rango, and now the two are sticking with Wild West-set adventures with The Lone Ranger. This time they're in the world of live action, which means the two are encroaching back on Pirates territory.

And by the looks of this first trailer, that's a great thing. Even if the first two Pirates sequels aren't as good as the original, they've still got considerable imagination and very grand set pieces, so we're more than happy to see the pair trade ships in the high seas for trains in the old West.

This time around Depp's playing Tonto, a Native American spirit warrior who fights greed and corruption alongside man of the law John Reid (Armie Hammer). So it's kind of like a buddy-cop movie, only instead of squad cars and donuts, there are horses and a dead crow on top of Depp's head.

But what say you? Are you on board for Verbinski and Depp's next adventure movie when it hits July 3rd, 2013? If not, why not?
