Director's Cut of 'Little Shop of Horrors' to Include Infamous Original Ending?

May 20, 2012

The team over at WSJ Speakeasy seem to know what they're doing. One NYC screening of Frank Oz's 1986 musical Little Shop of Horrors, a few well-placed phone calls, and voila: a little weekend news bite that should be great news to lots of movie nuts...

It looks like we're finally going to see that infamous "dark" ending that Frank Oz had to cut back in '86! Yes, this ending has been up on YouTube for a while, but there's a big difference between a sketchy clip and a full-bore digital reconstruction of this crazy end sequence. For those who wish to remain spoiler-free on this fantastic little relic, suffice to say that it's pretty apocalyptic, and for the others, well, go search the YouTubes. (The first run of WB's Little Shop (standard) dvd had the "big ending" as a deleted scene, but that version was duly yanked from shelves and presently runs pretty pricily at eBay.)

All we know for sure is that a Little Shop of Horrors director's cut is on the way from Warner Home Video, and that it'd be lunacy to produce such a release without that nasty ending. Between this and the Joseph Gordon-Levitt remake news, Little Shop of Horrors is looking to make a big-time comeback.

Thanks again to Speakeasy for this great nerdly news.
