Brian Joseph Davis' new Tumblr The Composites has brought various literary characters to life thanks to a little help from composite sketch software (yes, the kind used by law enforcement officials) and the written descriptions of each figure in the pages of novels. We're used to seeing Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo troubled-hacker Lisbeth Salander looking like Noomi Rapace and most recently Rooney Mara. Based on Larsson's description, however, Davis' composition appears far less typically attractive and almost bird-like. The sketch brings to mind all of the questions critics and moviegoers had about the sexualization of Lisbeth Salander with David Fincher's retelling versus the Swedish film version. Would that have been an issue had Fincher's version of Salander looked something like this?
Davis has other sketches, including F. Scott Fitzgerald's vivacious Daisy Buchanan. Shame
actress Carey Mulligan will play the author's invention for Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby
this December. Also pictured below are Nabokov's infatuated Humbert Humbert, who James Mason played in Stanley Kubrick's 1962 movie Lolita
, and Kevin Khatchadourian from Lionel Shriver's book We Need to Talk About Kevin
— played by Ezra Miller in Lynne Ramsay's remake
